The Manager Maresca Describes Pre-Match Time as The 'Toughest Two Days' with the Club
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca remarked that the preparation to Saturday's triumph against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian made a rather mysterious statement in his post-match media briefing even after notching a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those three precious points propelled Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, potentially improving the atmosphere after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's winless run to consecutive matches.
But, when questioned about the full-back's contribution and overall display, Maresca surprisingly shared his displeasure over the previous two days at the organization.
"How the squad are eager to improve has been excellent and this is the reason why I commend them - because with numerous issues, they are excelling after a difficult week," he commented.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the past 48 hours have been the worst because many people withheld support from us."
Pressed on his meaning, the former Leicester City boss elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When questioned if he meant people within at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was directed towards supporters or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."
Fitness & Disciplinary Crisis
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing fitness and disciplinary problems, remarking they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, as well as being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to two serious injuries.
"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are performing fantastic. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season minus our best player.
"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to acknowledge because the commitment from the players is fantastic."
Chelsea's triumph over Everton strengthened their standing in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.
Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Remark
It was not immediately clear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his spell as Chelsea head coach.
In that period, the Italian had traveled back with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at Cobham, faced a pre-match press briefing where he appeared at ease, and engineered a win over an in-form Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any specific media reports had unsettled him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something deeper from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an matter related to the club's supporters, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
