No less than 64 Dead in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
No less than 64 people were killed in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. Over 80 people were detained.
Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with shooting, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.
The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the security action, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements close to the city's international airport is regarded as the headquarters of a major illegal networks.
State officials said at least 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
