Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza experienced some of the most intense internal confrontations since the war began, between Hamas security personnel against gunmen from the al-Mujaida clan - a major families in the southern region.

As stated by Hamas officials, its security personnel conducted a raid in the district to arrest people accused of working with Israeli authorities.

However, eyewitness reports recounted an attack by about fifty armed individuals using multiple vehicles, carrying automatic weapons and a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, who invaded the al-Mujaida quarter and fatally shot five members from the clan.

Family members with weapons quickly fought back, initiating extended confrontations with intense gunfire.

Reports spreading through online platforms – difficult to independently verify – indicate that at least 11 Hamas personnel were fatally wounded, with multiple remains allegedly paraded in the streets.

Footage broadly distributed online, which remain unverified, purportedly display multiple wounded bodies in combat uniforms, featuring a narration alleging they were members of Hamas's "military division".

Additional footage captured sustained shooting and a rocket-propelled grenade striking a residential building in the neighborhood.

Community leaders eventually mediated to facilitate talks between the opposing groups, leading to an handover of casualties designed to control the escalation.

Although the exact motives remain unclear, the incident has intensified concern among local population.

Numerous residents worry that proliferation of arms, tensions between major families and Hamas's political dominance could escalate into circumstances reminiscent of domestic warfare in a territory already affected by displacement, destruction, and fear of increased chaos.

Observers suggest that the degree of hostility which Hamas faces from its numerous adversaries – groups that have been suppressed during its 17 years rule – is thought to be a significant component influencing the group to reject the ceasefire plan.

Additionally, there is fear of deadly retaliation, of facing execution in the streets, since the plan demands Hamas to give up all arms.

Indications indicate that the head of Hamas's military wing in Gaza has expressed disagreement regarding the proposal, which was announced recently.

The ceasefire plan includes a cut-off point for Hamas to agree or confront serious outcomes.
