Chemistry Nobel Award Recognizes Three Experts for Innovative Work on Metal-Organic Frameworks

The prestigious award in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M Yaghi for their influential research on metal-organic frameworks.

The scientists' investigations may help solve some of the major worldwide challenges, including capturing carbon dioxide to address global warming or minimizing plastic waste through advanced scientific methods.

“I feel tremendously honored and overjoyed, many thanks,” stated Professor Kitagawa during a call with the media event after receiving the announcement.
“How much time must I spend here? I need to leave for a scheduled meeting,” the laureate noted.

The 3 winners receive monetary reward of 11 million Swedish kronor (about £872k).

Molecular Architecture on a Center of the Achievement

Their scientists' studies centers around how molecular units are built in unison into intricate frameworks. Award organizers termed it “molecular architecture”.

The scientists developed techniques to create frameworks with considerable voids among the components, permitting different compounds to pass within them.

These compounds are known as MOFs.

The declaration was delivered by the academic institution during a media briefing in Stockholm, Sweden.

Susumu Kitagawa is based at the University of Kyoto in Japan, Professor Richard Robson is at the Melbourne University in Australia, and Omar Yaghi is connected to the University of California in the USA.

Earlier Nobel Winners in Science Categories

During the prior award cycle, three other scientists received the honor for their research on proteins, which are essential building blocks of living organisms.

It is the 3rd science recognition given in the current week. Earlier this week, three physicists won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on subatomic physics that enabled the advancement of the quantum processor.

Earlier, 3 experts' studies on how the biological immunity combats harmful microbes won them the honor for physiology.

One laureate, Dr. Ramsdell, did not receive the announcement for 20 hours because he was on an off-grid outing.
