Bungie's Challenged Shooter Project Marathon Is Gaining Momentum

The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, the studio's highly-anticipated game, has resurfaced with the news of a closed technical test set to run later this month.

A Challenging Path to Launch

First announced during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Marathon has undergone a bumpy development cycle. Last fall, Bungie stated plans were to start Alpha tests sometime in 2025. This was followed by quiet months, until the project was re-revealed in April with a Sept. 23 launch date. However, after some playtests led to negative feedback, the studio revealed during summer that it was postponing the game's launch.

Avoiding Past Mistakes

Despite Marathon has already seen its portion of issues, Bungie appears committed to ensure Marathon avoids the same outcome as other games. Now, it seems the project's progress is moving forward again, as Bungie just disclosed that it has run "several closed playtests to gather feedback on Marathon" since June of this year. The developer is opening the doors a bit wider, allowing additional participants to get an early look of the experience via an forthcoming "closed technical test."

Exclusive Testing Information

Considering it's a private testing phase, it's naturally limited access than, for example, an open beta. To participate in the technical test — which takes place between October 22nd to Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. PDT — participants must satisfy the listed pre-requisites:

  • Apply via their platform
  • Live in supported regions
  • Have access to a PS5, Xbox console, or compatible computer (system requirements include an Intel Core i5-6600 processor, supported graphics card, and 8GB RAM)
  • Join their community platform
  • Sign an NDA via the Discord server

Application Process

Registration is currently available, and to be considered for the private trial, players must complete registration by the October 16th deadline. PC users can also register via the digital platform starting on October 13th, with digital platform registrations due by Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. PDT. Bungie will notify players who qualify and provide details of the following procedures.

"This is an important checkpoint for us as we evaluate enhancements since the game's Alpha, including three maps, several character options, prox chat, re-tuned combat pacing, individual matchmaking, enhanced narrative elements, and additional features," Bungie said. "However, the Technical Test build is a work in progress and will only include a selection of what's intended for the game's final version, concentrating on the initial gameplay moments."

Additional Information

Additional details about the technical test and the game itself can be found on the game's support section. But for players who aren't selected for the trial (or don't have time), there's positive developments: Bungie says a official announcement on the state of the game is the next thing on the agenda once the trial concludes.

"We'll be sharing a comprehensive report on Marathon's development in the coming months after the Closed Technical Test!" Bungie announced.
