Blast Takes 3 Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Operation in Northern Italy
Three police officers perished and at least 15 people were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
Sequence of Events
The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence close to Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri force.
Legal Proceedings
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was located not long after. All three have been transported to medical facility.
The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.
Mediators had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member set off the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander informed news outlets.
A gas canister had been set off, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the interior minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
He thought the detonation had happened on a floor above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, noting that the three had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
