Anti-Trafficking Groups Caution Funding Suspension Might Facilitate Human Trafficking
A coalition of 74 legal, religious, and advocacy entities across the US has expressed concerns regarding the delaying of eighty-eight million dollars in federal funding earmarked for victims of modern slavery.
Support Systems in Jeopardy
According to a unified message, the US Department of Justice has frozen funding for more than 100 service providers that aid survivors break free from exploiters and access necessary resources such as housing, counseling, and case management.
"Permitting this money to disappear would enable human trafficking and put survivors’ lives at risk," the communication emphasizes. "Various communities will be without their sole assistance organization, leaving survivors with no safe emergency housing."
Appeal for Intervention
The alliance is pressuring legislators to compel the federal government to release the financial support to safeguard thousands of trafficking survivors across the country.
This plea is in response to reports that the administration has rolled back efforts to fight modern slavery, even as representatives deny any retreat on victim support policies.
Consequences for Regions
- Several support groups saw their funding end starting the last day of September.
- Lacking financial support, survivors may lose access to lifesaving services like safe shelter, mental health care, and legal aid.
- Traffickers could operate with impunity, increasing risks for vulnerable populations.
Administration's Position
Regarding concerns over the withheld money, the DOJ clarified that funds allocated by lawmakers would be utilized at a later time, but added that past recipients might not receive funding in the future.
Future appropriations will be decided aligned with the current administration's priorities, the agency said.
Past Endorsement
The letter further notes that lawmakers has overwhelmingly voted to continue these services over the past 25 years, underscoring the vital necessity of adequately resourcing crucial support systems to safeguard victims and prevent re-exploitation.
